When you think about really good BBQ, what comes to mind? Missouri? Tennessee? Texas?
While yes, good BBQ can be hard to come by in the Midwest, there is one place in Des Moines the might have you thinking again about what you consider good BBQ.
Uncle Wendell’s BBQis located in a tiny storefront on Ingersoll, in-between an apartment complex and a hair salon. There isn’t much to look at from the outside but once you enter those doors you smell their infamous cornbread mixed in with the smokey aroma of the ribs cooking in the back.
The brisket and the ribs are some of the customers favorite dishes to get. They slow cook and turn their ribs overnight in such a way that it is moist yet crisp the next morning for their customers. A full rack of ribs is only $11, so they feel good in your stomach and good for your wallet.
The menu ranges from pulled pork sandwiches, brisket sandwiches, ribs, brisket chili, and spicy creole. There is also an option to get the sample platte , which includes a small sample all of their meats for only $11. Their sides include cornbread, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans and of course mac and cheese.

Well their hours are listed here,be warned, sometimes the hours do change as the owner has a busy schedule. But it’s worth it.
With prices varying from $6-$12 the food is both fantastic and affordable. Did I mention that they also cater!?
